PERPLEXING HODGEPODGE
Hello, friends.We are currently...
Watching:
Ghibili movies with my bestie who has only ever seen Spirited Away(!). This week we watched Howl's Moving Castlel, next week maybe Totoro.Reading:
Harry Potter for the 9000th time, the new full-cast editions on certain audiobook apps.Knitting:
a color blocked cotton sweater. I don't really like cotton, but this stuff is noice. It's the worsted/aran weight Juniper Moon stuff.Painting:
Mr. Raven, who still very noticeably does not have feets but is now encircled by a beautiful glowing harvest moon. Side note: interference colors and metallics are my entire personality now, in regards to painting.Learning:
PHP, and all the updates made to CSS since I stopped coding 15ish years ago.Podcasting:
Dear Hank & John, as always; Lateral with TomScott, I've been on a roll lately and correctly guessed (or already knew) one answer for each of the last 6 episodes (which is shocking and now I'll probably never know another answer again); Ologies, with Daddie Ward; and You're Dead to Me, wherein I am 9 episodes behind and just waiting to blast through them now that I've let them build up.Anticipating:
"Hollywood, Ending" by John Green, and whatever secret book Hank is totally not working on that he has definitely not hinted at yet (unless you listen to the podcast or are on patreon).Meet the family
Just me & Roo, lil family of two. We used to be three not long ago, but my sweetest sweetpea Punkin Pie passed in october of 2025 and we both miss her dearly. She was 15 years, 3 weeks old and despite being an orange, was the smartest cat I've ever known. I genuinely must apologize to all the other oranges in the world: she was the reason the collective rest of you share only one brain cell - she had the rest of them. So sorry.
About me:
I started a new job in December of 2025 and I can genuinely say I like all the coworkers in my department. That's pretty impressive considering there's 11 of us. It's because they're all sassy and extremely kind. They are my kind of people.
I have tried approximately 9000 different crafts and have too many freakin' hobbies.
I do not like making noise or taking up space. I can not sing without external music because that is both making noise and filling the space of silence.
My bestie is absolutely the kind of person who would be into underwater basket weaving if that were a real thing, which is hilarious to me because he does not understand the joke. He once went to Mongolia to compete in a horseback archery competition. Underwater basket weaving, I tell you.
About Roo:
His full and proper legal name is Jack Squeakington [lastNameREDACTED]. Jackaroo (aka Roo) is what I actually call him, but also "sir" when he's being naughty and it's cute, or "shithead" when he's being naughty and it's less cute.
He is a 9 year old long haired tuxie and the sweetest cat I've ever met. He also has the world's softest tummy and it is CURLY. I'll give you $20 if you can find a better tummy anywhere. Go ahead, I'll wait.
I am 90% certain that the only word he knows is "cookies". He's very pretty.
Welcome, friends. What is this place?
First and foremost, this shit is hella under construction. Peruse at your own risk. (so many dead pages, son.) We are building this from the ground up after 10 years away from webdev and boy it is humbling.
Secondly, this is my love letter to The Old Internet and my own past in web dev.
I was there, Gandalf, 3000 years ago...
If you are unfamiliar with the term Commonplace Book, it is essentially the heart and soul of the maker laid bare. Alternatively, here is the wikipedia explanation, although I think you will find my assessment is much more intimately accurate. It is not necessarily a diary, thought it can include that. They are not necessarily public, either, but it's 2026 and this is a website, not a notebook.
What I would like This Book to become:
- A connection to the artistry I had as a child. Web dev brought out a creativity in me that I have been unable to access since I gave it up 10+ years ago and I want it back. This is my attempt to rekindle the flame and let passion ignite other areas of my life which are without light.
- An exploration of concepts and ideas (and maybe concepts of ideas) that I have buried within me for various reasons.
- A collection of tiny essays, reviews, and ponderings of the intellect around me, wherever it may come from. I want to remember the way things make me feel.
- An accessible reference book to things that interest me, empassion me, or scare me.
- An archive of the old websites I created while in high school because I did some hella cool shit y'all.
I hope you enjoy your stay, find something fun or thoughtful or inspiring, sign the Guestbook I will hopefully someday possibly install. May This Book help you grok things that elude, intimidate, and scare you. Or at the very least, may it entertain you enough to keep you off big scary newsfeeds for a little while.
